Case Study: SmileOn

SmileOn is a product-focused company that specializes in teeth whitening solutions. With several new products set for launch, they contracted Montreal Graphic Design to help them create a relevant logo and to provide packaging and design services in an effort to take advantage of current design trends and styles.

To date, this was one of the largest projects that Montreal Graphic Design has ever taken on. The scope of work included print design and packaging design, as well as company branding.

The Problem

As newcomer in the highly competitive teeth whitening industry,  SmileOn wanted to brand themselves with a modern and cosmetic look which distinguishes them from the competition.

Most companies in the oral product niche make use of modern design trends. Because of this, SmileOn decided to brand themselves using a modern and pro-health look that helps them stand out above their competition.

Recommended Solutions

We started by analyzing SmileOn’s competition and seeing what types of products, terminology, and color schemes they were using. Once we had a thorough understanding of what their competition was doing, it was easy to design material that was both competitive and attractive for prospective customers.

The health industry is dominated by many products. We determined that it was important to showcase the value that SmileOn’s products provided. This was accomplished by advertising the intended outcomes on the packaging in a manner that was pleasing to look at. This culminated in a well-designed package that made use of our color scheme, the newly designed smile logo, and engaging copywriting.

Montreal Graphic Design’s Solution

Color Scheme

It was determined that the best color scheme for the products would focus on a dark blue and green. This color combination is direct and pleasing to the eyes, and helps convey a sense of confidence and authority with consumers.

Typography

Fonts play an important role in the design process. Hurme Geometric Sans 4 was selected for the logo and packaging due to its sharp, but minimalist look. This font is modern, professional, and a great choice for a product in the health industry.

The Problem

SmileOn’s latest line of tooth whitening products required an updated look in order to succeed against other oral products on the market.

Most companies in the oral product niche make use of modern design trends and it wasn’t enough for SmileOn to misrepresent its products with a poorly designed logo and packaging.

“Montreal Graphic Design translated my vision for my logo perfectly. They are courteous, patient, and creative! I wouldn’t hesitate to refer them to others.”

Custom Packaging

Simple packaging wouldn’t have been enough to showcase SmileOn’s new teeth whitening products. Instead, we elected to do a custom design that incorporated the overall color scheme, the newly designed logo, several custom icons, and the chosen typography.

Bilingualism

SmileOn offers a diverse line of products that will be featured in multiple languages. Because of this, we decided to design packaging that was bilingual in order to attract customers that speak both French and English. This decision greatly increases the marketability of the product when compared to its Francophone peers.

Conclusion

The overall design process was a success and the packaging and design of SmileOn’s products helps them differentiate themselves from their competition.

The health industry is extremely competitive. It is important to try and establish a competitive advantage wherever possible. In this case, it was determined that the product was worthwhile on its own and that stellar packaging and design was what was required to help it develop its competitive edge.

SmileOn is in the process of launching a new website to go along with its latest product launch. The buzz generated by these major launches should help the company sell more products and establish itself as a leader in the industry.
